SUMMARY

In the journal” Tragedy and Insomnia” in The New English Journal of Medicine, December 20, 2001, the author, David P White, introduces several therapies to patients who get insomnia because of various exterior stresses. At the beginning of the journal, Lavie provides an example of a “terrorist attack” which occurred in America. Then base on the evidences of this issue, a number of people get troubles on sleep owing to feeling stressful after the disaster, he expands a doubt about if we should cure the troubles of sleep caused by pressure, in addition to what treatments can be exploited. Furthermore, the author explains that, stress is one of major reasons for inducing insomnia that often will be recovered without any medical treatment; however, there are also some cases of insomnia which might develop to chronic affections, due to patients’ excessive anxiety of their sleep capacities. Moreover, Lavie presents that, depression and various anxieties have been assumed by clinicians to be the signs of chronic “sleep disturbances” even though people still have no idea about how to single out which problems will expand to chronic forms. Lavie also indicates that, despite of the fact that, it is unclear whether the treatments applied to sleep troubles will be effective or not, we still have to implement them because of a number of severe results affected by insomnia. In addition, he predicts that, the therapies of insomnia will have an great effort to most insomniacs who didn’t show that, prior to getting through long processes of anxiety and depression as well as having negative emotion disorders, until the symptoms of insomnia exhibited. Furthermore, the author mainly lists the essential cure approaches. First, he claims that, clinicians ought to care patients as the instructions of “sleep hygiene” made by Lavie, second, that author reports that, clinicians could take advantage of the short period effects of some medicines containing benzodiazepine to help insomniacs. Third, he emphasizes that, particular patients with histories of abuse certain substance should not be treated by “hypnotic therapy”, for they are easier to get dependence on the drugs used in the treatment. He also explains that, clinicians should primarily according to two sides, the drugs applied to the treatments and what kind of troubles the patients have, to select the medicines that can be used to contribute to the therapies of hypnotization. Finally, Lavie suggests the treatments, from the area of actions, successfully adjust patients’ adverse emotions, and then gradually alleviate the classes of insomnia. Moreover, he indicates that, there are still many suspicions of utilizing benzodiazepines and hypnotic agent in long periods. The author also stresses that, although most insomnia caused by pressure, actual reasons must be some potential disorders exist in advance. Besides summing up all the cure methods mentioned in the journal, Lavie also concludes that, insomniacs should find out right measures, counting on their own conditions, to get proper treatments

CRITIQUE

In the journal, Lavie mainly present about insomnia induced by pressure and its relevance treatments. Even though he successfully organizes a clear structure of the therapies of insomnia and conclusion, it is obvious that, the last 2 and 3 paragraph seems like inappropriate base on the context. Throughout the journal, the author makes full use of expertise opinions and professional words. Furthermore, in my opinion, everyone will have whatever severe or mild insomnia. In spite of the fact that my instance of insomnia is not as acute as the type described in this journal, I undoubtedly have strong feelings of insomnia resulted in stresses, in particular, the nights before exams, I will be nervous and can not fall asleep, which is not only harmful for my health, but also leading me to insufficient energy in the following day’s exams. Thus, I am also a victim of insomnia.
